DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, American Watch Co, 19J, Model 1862, 20S, coin silver OF recase, white glass enamel SS dial with three-line signature having factory name in script font, KWKS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, Breguet hairspring, gold cup around barrel arbor, gilt mvt, s#250456. A rare top grade 20 size Waltham, per the http://nawccinfo.nawcc.org website the total production of the American Watch Co. grade Model 1862 is believed to be 369 made. This example is from the final production run of this grade which was a group of 70 watches spanning serial numbers 250401 to 250470, and this run of 70 is listed in Waltham factory records as having a notably large span of finish dates extending from January of 1868 to October of 1879 which is likely indicative that this top quality largest size movement was not a popular seller in this time period.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, plates with some scattered small bits of haze and few small dark spots; nearly flawless dial with few small fine scratches; excellent hands; case has been modified to accommodate the present mvt, case shows ample wear, some scattered nicks or mild dings, greatly reduced engraving detail, engine turning substantially lost with only a few small hints remaining; tight bow; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $1000 - $2000
